Electron-Hole Asymmetry in Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Probed by Direct Observation of Transverse Quasi-Dark Excitons

چکیده
We studied the asymmetry between valence and conduction bands in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) through the direct observation of spin-singlet transverse dark excitons using polarized photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy. The intrinsic electron-hole (e-h) asymmetry lifts the degeneracy of the transverse exciton wavefunctions at two equivalent K and K' valleys in momentum space, which gives finite oscillator strength to transverse dark exciton states. Chirality-dependent spectral weight transfer to transverse dark states was clearly observed, indicating that the degree of the e-h asymmetry depends on the specific nanotube structure. Based on comparison between theoretical and experimental results, we evaluated the band asymmetry parameters in various carbon nanotube structures and graphene. PACS: 71.20.-b, 71.35.Cc, 78.67.Ch

Observation of the triplet exciton in EuS-coated single-walled nanotubes.
Photon absorption by carbon nanotubes creates bound electron-hole pairs called excitons, which can exist in spin-polarized triplet or spin-unpolarized singlet configurations. Triplet excitons are optically inactive owing to the weak spin-orbit coupling in nanotubes. This prevents the optical injection of electron spin into nanotubes for spintronic applications and limits the efficiency of photo...
متن کاملObservation of excitons in one-dimensional metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes.
Excitons are generally believed not to exist in metals because of strong screening by free carriers. Here we demonstrate that excitonic states can in fact be produced in metallic systems of a one-dimensional character. Using metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes as a model system, we show both experimentally and theoretically that electron-hole pairs form tightly bound excitons. The exciton b...
متن کاملObservation of exciton-phonon sideband in individual metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes.
Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are quasi-one-dimensional systems with poor Coulomb screening and enhanced electron-phonon interaction, and are good candidates for excitons and exciton-phonon couplings in metallic state. Here we report backscattering reflection experiments on individual metallic SWCNTs. An exciton-phonon sideband separated by 0.19 eV from the first optical transition pe...
متن کاملExciton states and optical properties of carbon nanotubes.
Exciton states and related optical properties of a single-walled carbon nanotube are reviewed, primarily from a theoretical viewpoint. The energies and wavefunctions of excitons are discussed using a screened Hartree-Fock approximation with an effective-mass or k·p approximation. The close relationship between a long-range electron-hole exchange interaction and a depolarization effect is clarif...
متن کاملExcitons and terahertz transitions in narrow gap carbon nanotubes and graphene nanoribbons
We calculate the exciton binding energy in narrow band gap single-walled carbon nanotubes with and graphene nanoribbons, accounting for the quasi-relativistic dispersion of electrons and holes. Exact analytical solutions of the quantum relativistic two-body problem are obtained for several limiting cases. We show that the binding energy scales with the band gap, and conclude on the basis of the...
